The Car of the Future [Infographic Friday]

Could it be true? In the future, will cars really be able to drive themselves? According to this infographic from InsuranceQuotes, the advent of autonomous cars may one day evolve from a mere pipe dream to a concrete reality. In fact, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers estimates that “autonomous cars will account for up to 75% of all vehicles on the road by the year 2040.”

Sensors developed to activate autonomous breaking, electro-optical and infared cameras to aid vehicles while switching lanes, and technology facilitating wireless communication between vehicles are just some of the automated features that may define the car of the future. Such technological advancements could result in billions of dollars in savings for the United States alone. For instance, the autonomous vehicle could save the US $87.2 billion by cutting down on the 4.2 billion hours and 2.8 billion gallons Americans waste each year by sitting in traffic.

If this is the future of cars, how will the marketing of these vehicles change? Will that be automated too? Tell us what you think!
